Product Content

The Sentinel-2 30m HLS product consits of the surface reflectance
derived from Sentinel-2 MSI L1C data. Products are
resampled at 30m and include nadir-adjustment and spectral-adjustment.

Values correspond to:

  • Nadir-adjusted(*) Surface Reflectance (SR) for V-NIR-SWIR bands
  • SR for Red-edge bands
  • (*) Nadir-view, constant sun angle depending on the center latitude of the tile.

    Product specification

    • Spatial: 30m
    • Spectral: OLI-like spectral response for V-NIR-SWIR bands, and original MSI for NIR B08 and Red-edge bands
    • temporal: All Sentinel-2 L1C granules
    • Nadir-adjustment: Yes

    Output Projection & Gridding

Product gridding is based on the Sentinel-2 tile (granules) scheme
defined by ESA. Product are 109.80×109.80 km2 in UTM/WGS84 projection.
They are identified by a Tile
ID that start with a UTM zone and latitude band (e.g. Tile 18SUJ is located in UTM zone
18 and latitude band S). Each UTM zone and latitude band polygon is split into the 109.80×109.80 km2 tiles that slightly
overlap. A table with each Tiles ID with coordinate
of the upper-left pixel, tile size can be downloaded here.

    Spectral Adjustment

SR will be adjusted from spectral difference occurring between MSI
and OLI. The spectral response of the product is derived from OLI,
except for NIR B08 and Red-Edge bands. the spectral adjustment is a
band-to-band linear regression using equivalent bands from the 2 sensors
    (see Table).

Band name OLI band number equivalent MSI band number
    Coastal aerosol 1 1
    Blue 2 2
    Green 3 3
    Red 4 4
    NIR 5 8A
    SWIR 1 6 11
    SWIR 2 7 12

    Spatial resampling algorithm

The resampling methods are different with input spatial resolution:

    • MSI 10m bands are resampled to 30m with simple average,
    • MSI 20m bands are resampled to 30m with area-weighted average,
    • MSI 60m bands are replicated to the 30m pixels that are nested within.

    File Naming

Each tile is stored in a single HDF file. File naming convention follows:

    HLS.S30.<Tile_ID>.<year>.<doy>.v<version number>.hdf
